Hoverboards vs. Electric scooters: Who Wins?

Updated: Mar 6

In the last few years a lot of alternative means of transport were introduced in the market, such as electric scooters, los hoverboards, e-bikes, etc. Even so, some of them have a longer history: the electric scooters.

The electric scooters could be considered as a evolutionary modern successor of the kickscooter, with the difference that it is powered by an electric motor.

On the other side, the hoverboards are defined as self-balancing scooters also moved by an electric force. Their motors are installed inside each wheel. These scooters have a gyroscope and an acceleration sensor that makes them move forward or backward and change the direction.

At first glance, the hoverboards look way more attractive and stylish, due to its innovative design, but both vehicles have some advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered, especially if you need a vehicle for your daily commute or a longer distance trip.

Easy to use

These scooters are contemporary and designed to correspond to users´ needs, so that they are both really easy to use. The disadvantage of the hoverboard is that at the beginning you need more time to practice because the balance of the body position is the key to its maneuvering.

When referring to the children, the hoverboards are more difficult to use because of this balance and that is why they are not recommended for them. If you want to make your kid happy and keep him/her safe at the same time, give him/her an electric scooter. Joyor H1 is a model specially designed to be used by kids.

Size

When it comes to the comfort of the users, it is really important for the vehicle to be easily transported and stored and this depends mostly on its size.

The hoverboards are relatively small and light, their weight is around 10kg.

The electric scooters are bigger, but their design allows them to be folded, so that they reduce their size and fulfil the requirements for comfort.

Distance range

The distance range is an important factor especially when you use the electric scooter frequently. It is determined by the capacity of the battery.

Both types of scooters are powered by a lithium battery, even so, the distance range of the hoverboards is smaller. Most of the hoverboards have a distance range between 10-20km. On the other hand, the electric scooters come in different models and with different technical features which allow them to have a bigger distance range.  Some models of Joyor such as Joyor Y10 and Joyor F5+ can reach up to 100km with a single battery charge.

Speed

The speed factor depends on the regulations in each state, city, country etc. In the case of Europe, in many countries the speed limit is 25 km/h. Most of the hoverboards can reach only up to 15 km/h, while the electric scooters can reach a higher level of speed.

The speed depends not only on the power of the motor, but also on the terrain. The design of the hoverboards does not allow them to be driven on a bumpy road, instead, they could be driven only on a flat surface without any imperfections. The unevenness of the road can make you lose the balance, so that you can easily fall off.

On the other side, the electric scooters can be driven even on a bumpy road because of their structure, which is more solid and secure. Also, there are models with bigger tires and better absorption system, like the ones of the X Series, which absorb the irregularities of the road and guarantee you a safe ride.

Safety

Safety is probably the most important factor when referring to means of transport.

Previous cases show that the hoverboards can explode because of the battery which tends to overheat easily. Also, because of their structure, people lose balance and fall off easier, while on the electric scooter you can maneuver with bigger margin and its structure is definitely more stable and solid.

The final decision of which type of scooter is better is yours, but at least from these results we can say that the electric scooter is safer than the hoverboard and could be used for longer distance trips. It can also reach a higher speed level (always according to the speed limit regulations). If you need transportation in your everyday routine, regardless of whether you need to get to work or just want to go for a “walk”, the electric scooter is more durable and reliable.
